Fire Rips Through Historic Buildings
Picture
Picture
In the early morning of August 14, fire ripped through half of the landmark buildings that make up the physical heart of Thousand Island Park.  In the only serious fire since the Columbian Hotel burned in 1912,  the Guzzle, the grocery store, the emergency vehicle garage, and a number of small shops were destroyed.  We lost our fire trucks and ambulance and although the historic post office is damaged, the original postal boxes seem to be intact.

Thousand Island Park Landmark Society thanks the many firefighters from across Jefferson County for their hard work and skill in containing the blaze.  The Wellesley Hotel is unharmed as are the nearby cottages.  There was no loss of life.

TIPLS will work with our community partners in the planned restoration of our historic buildings. There will be a community meeting in the Tabernacle at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 16.  The Thousand Island Park Foundation is accepting donations to restore the buildings at PO Box 1103, Thousand Island Park, NY 13692.  Further information regarding donations may be obtained at (315) 482-2576.
